Upon the release of the overhauled TR4 IRS – dubbed the “TR4A” – a few notable changes were made to the carpet set. At first glance, most of the carpeted areas of the car looked similar to its predecessor, the TR4 – but due to updates to the Dash Console area at the front of the car, as well as the moving of the safety handbrake lever – some carpet pieces were adapted to suit. As with the previous incarnation, the Front Floor Footwell carpets were extended allowing them the bend up into the engine firewall section of the car, underneath the dash. The Rear Floor Carpets maintained the rear floor pan shape following the curvature of the tub around the Wheelarch Wheels.  The Rear Shelf was a large one-piece setup with it folding over the shelf and down onto the tub floor. There were cut-outs at the rear for the differential “diff” hump, and at the front for the prop shaft tunnel. The Sills were again carpeted running from the A posts to the B posts along the base of the door opening step. Another area which remained unchanged to the TR4 models was the “A” Post Kick Panels in the footwell, directly in front of the doors. These carpets pieces were trimmed onto a millboard panel and affixed in the car. With the Gear Lever Stick being repositioned on the top of the newly introduced H Frame Console Assembly, the carpet underneath this area reduced in size to allow for this floor to dash framework of the console to be fitted. The prop shaft cover received an update with a pre-sewn material handbrake gaiter cover  – as the propshaft tunnel was the new favoured position of the hand-operated safety brake mechanism. These changes first introduced for the TR4″A” model – were maintained for all the following TR5, TR250 and TR6 models.

Following on from the uncertainty of the exact materials and colours used for the Triumph TR4 carpets – the records for the TR4A to TR6 carpets seem a little more conclusive. For the TR4A, TR5 and TR250 models it appears that Triumph favoured using Wool “cut-pile” carpet, rather than the briefly used synthetic Nylon Rayon “loop-pile” carpet of the late TR3As and TR4 models. Some TR6 models seem to have also left with Wool Carpets, before Triumph switched to a cut-pile Nylon synthetic material toward the end of the TR6 production era. The carpets were made in a colour to complement the main trim colour – and featured a Vynide (Leathercloth) binding on the edges – and as with previous models, not all edges of every piece were bound. Exactly like the TR4, there were rubber ribbed heel pads situated on the Drivers Side Front Floor Footwell carpet, as well a small “D” shaped heel pad on the driver side vertical A Post Bulkhead Panel, and a matching “D” heelpad on the drivers side section of the gearbox clutch housing carpet section.

Our patterns for these carpets were templated using doner cars and the factory originals. Over the years, John himself has owned and restored numerous TRs – and we have also worked very closely with trimmers and restorers to update and improve the carpets were possible. An example of this has been making certain un-edged areas of carpet pieces wider/longer to allow for easier position and fitment to cater for inconsistencies between the cars. We can offer either Wool or Nylon for your restoration, although we strongly recommend Wool as it is superior in quality, finish and feel. We include the three heelpads as outlined above, but can also offer a universal setup if you prefer with heel pads on both driver and passenger sides. Our kits also include the pre-sewn handbrake cover (in leather or vinyl) in a variety of colours. Our familiarity with these cars, correctly templated – with logical improvements based on personal knowledge of the cars – and our use of only most premium raw materials has made John Skinner kits the industry benchmark when it comes to restoring your Triumph TR4A-TR6.

You may wish to consider our Underfelt Soundproofing Kit to ensure the best fitment in the car, as well as the Carpet Fixing Kit. Replacement A Post Footwell Kick Panels and the Propshaft Handbrake Panel may also be required depending on the condition of your original panels.

Due to industry-wide inconsistencies in production and record-keeping, it is widely accepted that the interpretation of original shades varies depending on who you ask. As a result, John Skinner Ltd offers multiple “original” shade options for you to make your final choice from. Below is a list of these accepted “original” colour choices that John Skinners can offer for your Triumph restoration project.

Due to the range of products we offer, and our worldwide customer base, we can only calculate an accurate shipping cost once Your Quote has been received by our Sales Team. As there is no payment required at this stage – use our online shop in full confidence, with zero commitment to purchase – and send us your Quotation request for your interior trim requirements; and we will get in touch directly with you with an updated Quote, which will include the shipment costs.

In the meantime, basic guideline shipping costs are outlined below.

(For all non-UK shipments – the final price per box depends on the size of the box – which is dictated by the items in your final selection)

UK: £10.50 – £20 per box

Europe & European Union: £20 – £120 per box

North America & Canada: £28.50 – £125 per box

Rest of World: £42.50 – £200 per box

Generally speaking, a complete car interior kit (Trim Panels, Carpets, Seat Covers, Boot/Trunk area, Soft Top Hoods etc) normally requires 2 x FULL Size Boxes, with some cars needing slightly less, and some slightly more.

Please note that these prices are exclusive of VAT (UK Customers ONLY) and any additional customs or handling charges that may be incurred during shipping. These prices are given as an approximation only.

Brexit

You can read a full guide to Brexit and JSM here.

To briefly summarise the details…

As of January 2021, the UK is no longer part of the European Union (EU). As a result, several changes have been implemented which affects how EU based customers now purchase things from the UK. Here is a brief overview…

The UK Value Added Tax (VAT @ 20%) is no longer applicable to any customers purchasing from outside the UK, assuming these goods leave the UK. To clarify, no VAT (20%) will be charged on initial purchase for any goods leaving the UK.

Instead your local country tax is charged upon importation into that country. This is based on the value of the goods as stated on the customs Invoice we supply. For most European countries – the result of this change is minimal as most local taxes range between 17% and 22% for the large majority of EU based countries. Note that some countries have lower tax rates, and others have higher, this is purely a guideline.

You will be contacted by a customs official upon arrival of the parcels to the destination country – and they will request payment of these taxes.

All shipping agents levy a small administration charge for “clearing customs” normally of a value around €5 – €10.

Our products are 100% UK Manufactured, therefore our products are Tariff/Duty free – meaning that you should not incur additional tariff charges upon importation. It should be noted that we use the HS Commodity Code (Tariff Code) 8708.99.9790 “Parts and accessories of the motor vehicles of headings 8701 to 8708 > Other Parts…” – for the majority of the kits that we supply.

For any Trade or Wholesale Customers – if you provide us with your EORI number – then this is noted at the point of import, allowing you to claim back the Tax from your local government when you issue you tax returns.
