The Panel directly in front of the rear fuel tank bulkhead was a prominent interior panel for the TR4/4A, TR5/TR250, and TR6 models. Following the gentle curvature of the rear cockpit bodywork – this panel was embossed with a pattern to make it more aesthetically pleasing. Here at John Skinners, we have all the correct HF tooling for these original factory specification designs and finishes. With the TR4″A” model, first launched in 1965, Triumph continued where they had left off with the TR4 model. Although this model saw the introduction of the Independent Rear Suspension – hence sometimes being referred to as a TR4 “IRS” – the interior trim and upholstery parts remained similar to that of earlier TR4 models. The rear bulkhead assembly panel situated directly in front of the fuel/petrol tank was very similar in look and finish – still using the HF/RF welding (High-Frequency/Radio-Frequency) technique to emboss vertical weld lines. There was one important difference to the earlier TR4 bulkhead casing panel – with the TR4A having deeper corners. This was to accommodate the changes made to the Wheelarch bodywork tub. The earlier TR4 cars featured rounded/curved wheel arch, but for the TR4A models, these were flattened to allow for the bulkier Hood Frame metalwork to be stowed away. This had a knock-on effect to the depth of the corners of the wheelarch quarter panels, which in turn meant that corners of the corresponding bulkhead panel were made larger to ensure they match up. It is worth keeping this in mind – as we have seen instances where the bodywork has been restored using a different rear tub – causing confusion when it came to the fitment of the interior panels. This same adapted shape was continued all the way through the end of the TR6 production run in the late 1970s; albeit with a change of design of the embossed lines taking place in 1970.

The panel for this rear trim board bulkhead assembly left the factory upholstered in Vynide (Leathercloth). Commonly these days, this material is superseded with Vinyl (Ambla), although Leathercloth (Vynide) is still available if requested (colour dependent). Very few cars, if any, would have left with Leather panels – and if they did, this would have been a special order item. Note when “Leather” is mentioned on the heritage certificates, this is often only referring to the Seats. See our FAQs for more information. Unlike the earlier TR3A cars, this bulkhead panel did not feature any piping/beading.
