After the overhaul of the Triumph TRs in the early 1960s with a somewhat radical redesign by Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti, the majority of the interior trim items were also completely updated, with various new techniques introduced allowing for changes to the overall aesthetics of the upholstery. The leading edge of the B Post Pillars featured a small triangular millboard panel at the lower edge, which acted as an extra reinforced “gusset” pad for the closing of the door panels. For the TR4 and TR4A models, it was only the inside of the cabin area that was covered with this assembly panel – with the outside ridge and edge being left as bare exposed metalwork. For the TR5, TR250 and TR6 models – this B Post Finish panel was made slightly larger with a crease to follow the ridge of the gusset, and excess material that was folded around and over to cover up the external-facing bodywork area of the gusset.

These reinforcement assembly cover pads were millboard panels covered in Vynide (Leathercloth) when leaving the original factory production line. Commonly these days, this material is superseded with Vinyl (Ambla), although Leathercloth (Vynide) is still available if requested (colour dependent). Very few cars, if any, would have left with Leather covers – and if they did, this would have been a special order item. Note when “Leather” is mentioned on the heritage certificates, this is often referring to the only the Seats, with other elements of the car remaining in Leathercloth (Vynide) / Vinyl (Ambla). See our FAQs for more information.

Our panels are templated using the original factory designs – and have been tried and tested for decades on thousands of cars around the world. All of our panels are cut on our in-house CNC machine attaining millimetre precision and accuracy each time. It is no secret that these cars were manufactured during an era of inconsistent mass production techniques. As a result of this – we can never wholeheartedly say our panels fit 100% of the time – this would be foolish! However, due to decades of production of these parts and feedback from our clients and professional fitters – we are confident that we do offer the most consistent and best-fitting panels on the market. In addition to this, we offer after-sale support for those who require further assistance should any issues be encountered during the fitment process. Needless to say, this approach to manufacture has made John Skinner Ltd the industry benchmark in quality and finish for your Triumph TR4 / TR4A interior trim panels.
