Unofficially dubbed the TR3″A” – September 1957 saw some fairly major modifications to the TR3 – and this included updates to the interior trim and upholstery. With a production run that lasted until 1962, over 60,000 cars were made if you include the TR3B models. One of the main overhauls from the preceding TR3 model was the front seats – which became narrower and more “egg” shaped whilst still maintaining a subtle bucket shape to its backrest. Like the earlier TR models – the covers were supplied either in Leathercloth (Vynide) which is often confused with and substituted for Vinyl (Ambla), or Leather. It is worth noting that these “Leather” seats would have most likely only have been supplied in Leather on the facings of the seat, with Leathercloth backs and surrounding areas. This is commonly referred to as “LeatherFaced” and should not be confused with Full Leather, which JSM can also offer.

The construction of the seat skins was redesigned for the TR3A and TR3B models with a horizontal pleat squab and cushion pattern design. The piping on this updated seat assembly focussed mostly on the outer contours of the cover, as the horseshoe design of its predecessors was abandoned. Instead, two rows of piping were used on the outer circumference of the backrest squab cover, and a single row of beading used on the outside edge of the cushion base cover. These outer pipings were originally White for the large majority of the cars that left the production line. There was a small horizontal piping section on the cushion front panel section – which was always self-coloured to match the main trim colour.

Templated from the original factory line covers, John Skinner Ltd has been the industry benchmark in quality and finish when restoring your Triumph TR3A/B seat assembly. Offering made-to-order kits from the widest range of colours and material options on the market – JSM can cater for all requirements whether it be to original factory-line specifications or a more bespoke look – and they arrive ready to be installed to your original bucket seat metal framework by either a professional trimmer, or yourself. You may wish to consider our seat padding kits and spring base cushion units to achieve the best results.
