Not included in every car – the optional occasional Rear Seat can make a lovely addition to your Triumph TR3A/B; albeit not the most practical of seats ever designed – it certainly livens up the rear deck area of the car! Available in a variety of materials and colours – please see below for more in-depth descriptions, videos, and frequently asked questions (FAQs).

Unofficially dubbed the TR3″A” – September 1957 saw some fairly major modifications to the TR3 – and this included updates to the interior trim and upholstery. With a production run that lasted until 1962, over 60,000 cars were made if you include the TR3B models. The earlier TR2 and TR3 did have a factory option to fit a rear seat assembly unit – but this was extremely rare to see. Still not included as standard from the factory, Triumph did introduce a more frequently used rear seat base. Unlike its predecessor which included a cushion base and a backrest squab – the TR3A models simply had a base assembly unit, and the rear bulkhead panel doubled up as a backrest squab – albeit not the most comfortable! Like the earlier TR models – the covers were supplied either in Leathercloth (Vynide) which is often confused with and substituted for Vinyl (Ambla), or Leather. It is worth noting that these “Leather” seats would have most likely only have been supplied in Leather on the facings of the seat, with Leathercloth backs and surrounding areas. This is commonly referred to as “LeatherFaced” and should not be confused with Full Leather, which JSM can also offer.

The construction of the seat skins was updated for the TR3A and TR3B models. Instead of a wide horseshoe style surround and front-to-back/vertical pleats – the TR3A models switched to horizontal pleats with a front border and side borders separated by piping. This piping was originally White on the outside edges, with the centre horizontal section of piping made in a matching shade to the main trim colour. There was a change in this Rear Seat Unit between what we refer to as the “early” and “late” TR3A models. The cars that were built before October 1959, with a chassis number prior to TS60,000, left with a sloping rear deck shelf area. For these models, the Rear Seat Cushion Cover had a “Curved” front edge. All later TR3A models, post TS60k, and all TR3B models had an altered flat rear shelf area; and for all of these models, the Rear Seat Base was changed to a “Square” front edge design.
