Despite various other internal changes to the interior trim and upholstery – the main door panel trim board remained relatively unchanged between the TR4/TR4A/TR5/TR250 and TR6 models. The only slight difference during this decade long production run was a change to the pattern embossed onto this panel. Still using the HF/RF welding (High-Frequency/Radio-Frequency) technique to emboss weld line patterns – the initial TR6 cars left with the exact same horizontal four-line pattern that had been used on the TR4/TR4A/TR5/TR250 models. It was only in 1970 (around CP/CC 50k) that this pattern was updated to a two-line horizontal pattern – which was continued until the production of the TR6s was ceased in 1976. The elasticated “map” pocket concept and design were maintained throughout production offering a somewhat basic solution to storing navigation maps or driving gloves…of course, these days, it is perfect for storing a smartphone! As with the earlier variants, the piping/beading was also present around the door panels – although this was originally supplied in a matching colour to the main trim as standard for all TR6 models. This served a dual purpose of not only improving the aesthetics of the inside of the car; but also for a practical purpose in helping to hide the gaps between panels and bodywork! Triumph, like many other marques of this generation, were masters of deception on their production lines! The positions of the window winders and the door release handle was also updated from the earlier models, and although records are a little misleading – at some point in around 1974/75 – Triumph removed the moulded plastic door top used for pulling the door closed – and replaced this with a centrally located square cut-out in the door panel – allowing the doors to be pulled shut using the door panel itself.

As with the earlier TR4-TR250 panels – these Door assembly units left the factory upholstered in a grained finish unsupported PVC material – often confused with Vynide (Leathercloth) which was used elsewhere in the cars. Commonly these days, this material is superseded with Vinyl (Ambla), although Leathercloth (Vynide) is still available if requested (colour dependent). Very few cars, if any, would have left with Leather panels – and if they did, this would have been a special order item. Note when “Leather” is mentioned on the heritage certificates, this is often only referring to the Seats. See our FAQs for more information. As with the earlier versions of this panel, no piping/beading was featured on this panel. It is worth keeping in mind that for the TR6 models with chassis numbers starting with “CR” or “CF” (approx 1973 onward) – Triumph updated some of their standard colour offerings for the Trim Panels and Seats to be supplied in an Ambla material with a heavy grain finish – commonly known to as “Rough Grain” (RG) – with others referring to it as “Bubble Grain / 1290 Grain”.

Our panels are templated using the original factory designs – and have been tried and tested for decades on thousands of cars around the world – with John himself owning and restoring various TRs over the years. Given this 40 year history of supplying the same parts – we can confidently offer the most authentic and best-fitting panels on the market; as well as offering the widest range of original and bespoke colours. We, at John Skinners, are also one of the only restorers in the world who can offer the original embossed HF pattern, which is a sentiment to our dedication to offering not only the best fitting items in the industry – but also the investment in the machinery and tooling to allow us to authentically reproduce the parts to the original specifications. In the 40 years that John Skinners have been supplying interior trim parts for the Triumph TR4-TR6 range, we have become the established leading manufacturer of these parts due to our accurate replicas of the OEM panels, as well as very in-depth hands-on knowledge of these specific cars.
