With the majority of these headliner and rear screens being supplied in White, these are often the first areas of the car to start getting noticeably dirty and worn. The TR4 models saw a “Surrey Top” version introduced an option as standard from the factory production line. This incorporated a fixed window frame section at the rear of the car – similar to what you see on modern-day “Targa” cars – enabling the car to be semi-convertible with an opening directly above the driver and passenger seats, whilst maintaining the fixed and wind-shielding rear screen frame section. This half-hardtop version was offered as a standard factory option for all TR4, TR4″A”, TR5 and TR250 models; before being discontinued and replaced with an alternative full-hardtop style for some TR6 models. The Surrey Top models featured a removable hardtop panel that could be fixed in place to make the car essentially a full hardtop car. A soft material Surrey Top Canopy cover as also offered, allowing the owner to essentially use the car as an open-top car with an easy to fit, and much more transportable, cover for the surrey top opening should you get caught in a sudden downpour of rain!

For those cars fitted with the Surrey Top hardtop panel – the inside of this roof assembly panel was lined in a heavy grained “longhorn” PVC material, in either white or black, when originally leaving the factory. This same material was also used to upholster the rear windscreen lower and upper backlight surrounds as well as the b post uprights and quarter panel tonneau cappings. The main headlining section of the surrey top was a pre-sewn cover with scrim loops sewn onto the underside which was used to insert three metal rods, that went from left-to-right in the car to secure the headliner in place.

John Skinner Ltd has supplied thousands of these kits during our four decades of manufacturing interior trim for the Triumph TR4 range. Our patterns for this specific part have been templated using original factory doner cars, of which John himself has owned various models – enabling us to try and test the fitment of this panel first hand. As a result of this first-hand experience, we have also updated our kits to make the parts wider and longer than they need to be – enabling for the excess material to used to pull and stretch easily during the fitment process – before being trimmed off at the final stage. This depth of knowledge and updating of patterns and designs due to both first-hand experience as well as constructive feedback from our worldwide base of clients has made John Skinner Ltd the leading manufacturer of interior trim and upholstery for the Triumph TR range; with a history of manufacturing the same parts spanning more than 40 years.

NOTE – This kit includes the Hardtop (Surrey Top) Headliner as well as the materials to retrim the Rear Screen sections. This latter element can also be purchased individually if required.
