The Dash and Crash Roll areas on these Triumph TR models were high-wear and exposed areas of the cars. Exposed to the elements these parts are often crumbling away and faded – and thus require replacing during any thoughtful restoration. Here at John Skinners, we have just the solution to freshen up your original console unit. Please see below for more in-depth descriptions, videos, and frequently asked questions (FAQs).

Upon the release of the majorly overhauled TR4, designed by Italian Giovanni Michelotti – a few notable changes were made to the front dash and console areas of the cars when compared to the earlier TR models. During the 15 or so years of production from the TR4, all the way through to the TR6 models – there were a variety of subtle changes, but the basic principles of these dash/console parts remained consistent throughout. One of the main inclusions in this area for the TR4 models – was the crash rolls surrounding the dashboard facia assembly panel. This consisted of the “upper” dash top scuttle crash roll pad; which spanned from left to right directly underneath the windscreen glass; and the “lower” crash roll assembly pads (sold separately) which surrounded the left and right corners of the dash facia; meeting in the middle at the switch plinth assembly unit.

These dash top scuttle crash pad assembly was essentially a moulded metal framework covered with a vacuum-formed black grained plastic cover with an expanded foam backing. These featured horizontal slit openings with plastic finishers for demisting the windscreen glass. The TR6 models also saw the introduction of a plastic ashtray casing in the centre of the scuttle assembly unit. Unlike the earlier TR2-TR3B models which featured the Dash areas in a matching colour to the main trim – the TR4 to TR6 models always left the factory with this area in Black – presumably as a cost-saving exercise, as well as the undoubted acknowledgement that there is reduced glare from the sunlight from black surfaces, assisting in improved safety for the drivers.

Here at John Skinners, we have developed patterns enabling the original dash-top crash pad frames to be re-trimmed in a plain or pre-sewn french seam Vinyl (Ambla) or Leather cover – in either Black to suit originality or a custom colour scheme. These “Re-Trim Kits” are to be used in conjunction with your original crash pad assembly units to re-upholster these parts over the top of the existing pvc units. When offering this material cover in Leather (either grained or smooth), we will “skiv” any applicable parts down for you at no extra cost. Skiving, or the thinning of leather is a process to reduce the thickness by slicing away a layer of the “flesh” underside. This finish is especially useful for areas that are to be folded or bent whilst remaining pliable and without losing any of its core strength – helping to achieve a neat finish by reducing the bulk of the material in certain areas. We do not supply moulded foam units for this section – as we encourage our clients to re-use their original equipment where possible to avoid any issues with fitment of poorly manufactured after-market replica moulded parts. We have used this covering kit to great success for decades – and due to Johns ownership of various TR5 and TR6 models over the years – we know first hand of the fitment process of these parts. This kit, as well as various other in-house designed dash and console kits, are one of the many reasons that John Skinner Ltd continues to be the benchmark for interior trim and upholstery for Triumph TRs, and have been for over 40 years now.

Due to industry-wide inconsistencies in production and record-keeping, it is widely accepted that the interpretation of original shades varies depending on who you ask. As a result, John Skinner Ltd offers multiple “original” shade options for you to make your final choice from. Below is a list of these accepted “original” colour choices that John Skinners can offer for your Triumph restoration project.

As there is no payment required at this stage – use our online shop in full confidence, with zero commitment to purchase – and send us your Quotation request for your interior trim requirements; and we will get in touch directly with you with an updated Quote, which will include the shipment costs.

In the meantime, basic guideline shipping costs are outlined below.

(For all non-UK shipments – the final price per box depends on the size of the box – which is dictated by the items in your final selection)

UK: £10.50 – £20 per box

Europe & European Union: £20 – £120 per box

North America & Canada: £28.50 – £125 per box

Rest of World: £42.50 – £200 per box

Generally speaking, a complete car interior kit (Trim Panels, Carpets, Seat Covers, Boot/Trunk area, Soft Top Hoods etc) normally requires 2 x FULL Size Boxes, with some cars needing slightly less, and some slightly more.

Please note that these prices are exclusive of VAT (UK Customers ONLY) and any additional customs or handling charges that may be incurred during shipping. These prices are given as an approximation only.

Brexit

You can read a full guide to Brexit and JSM here.

To briefly summarise the details…

As of January 2021, the UK is no longer part of the European Union (EU). As a result, several changes have been implemented which affects how EU based customers now purchase things from the UK. Here is a brief overview…

The UK Value Added Tax (VAT @ 20%) is no longer applicable to any customers purchasing from outside the UK, assuming these goods leave the UK. To clarify, no VAT (20%) will be charged on initial purchase for any goods leaving the UK.

Instead your local country tax is charged upon importation into that country. This is based on the value of the goods as stated on the customs Invoice we supply. For most European countries – the result of this change is minimal as most local taxes range between 17% and 22% for the large majority of EU based countries. Note that some countries have lower tax rates, and others have higher, this is purely a guideline.

You will be contacted by a customs official upon arrival of the parcels to the destination country – and they will request payment of these taxes.

All shipping agents levy a small administration charge for “clearing customs” normally of a value around €5 – €10.

Our products are 100% UK Manufactured, therefore our products are Tariff/Duty free – meaning that you should not incur additional tariff charges upon importation. It should be noted that we use the HS Commodity Code (Tariff Code) 8708.99.9790 “Parts and accessories of the motor vehicles of headings 8701 to 8708 > Other Parts…” – for the majority of the kits that we supply.

For any Trade or Wholesale Customers – if you provide us with your EORI number – then this is noted at the point of import, allowing you to claim back the Tax from your local government when you issue you tax returns.
